Features

What Simply Calm does

An AI coach grounded in the Gottman Method

Names patterns like criticism and contempt as they surface, offers a kinder rewording, and holds both sides of a conflict fairly.

On-device intelligence, always

Coaching runs on Apple's on-device Foundation Models framework, with a hand-written rule-based fallback on hardware without Apple Intelligence. It's never a degraded stub.

Flooding protection

Every message is scored for physiological flooding; a runaway conversation is paused behind guided breathing before anything unhelpful gets said.

Always-on safety screening

A local screener recognises self-harm, harm-to-others and medical-emergency language and surfaces crisis resources ahead of any coaching.

Five guided breathing patterns

Rescue, Box, 4-7-8, Coherent and a 20-minute Flooding reset, each with a haptic-synchronised breathing ring.

Daily check-ins and insights

A two-slider anger-and-sleep check-in feeds Swift Charts insights, including an auto-generated correlation between anger and sleep quality.

Selective, redactable sharing

A session can be exported as a PDF or text share pack for a partner or therapist, with a toggle that reduces raw messages to themes.

A companion for the moments anger takes over

Simply Calm is a private, on-device companion for anger and conflict, built for people whose fuse has been shortened, often by broken sleep. It helps someone cool down physiologically, understand what their anger is doing to a conversation, and find words a partner can actually hear. It's built on the Gottman Method and Nonviolent Communication, and it's explicit throughout that it's a self-help tool, not therapy or a medical service.

An AI coach that holds both sides fairly

The Coach is an AI mediation chat that validates a user's feelings without endorsing hostility. It names Gottman's Four Horsemen (criticism, contempt, defensiveness, stonewalling) in the user's own words, and offers a concrete, kinder rewording alongside a fair view of the partner's perspective. Every message is scored for physiological flooding. Past a threshold, the app pauses the conversation behind a mandatory breathing interstitial, with escalation to a full flooding reset when needed. A local, always-on safety screener sits ahead of all of this. It recognises self-harm, harm-to-others and medical-emergency language, and surfaces crisis resources (Samaritans, NHS 111, 999/112, 988) before any coaching begins.

Intelligence that never leaves the phone

What sets Simply Calm apart technically is where the intelligence lives: coaching runs on Apple's on-device Foundation Models framework, so a vent about a relationship never leaves the device. On hardware without Apple Intelligence, a hand-written, clinically-grounded rule engine takes over seamlessly. The app is never reduced to a stub. SwiftData handles all local persistence, and there are no accounts, no analytics and no network calls at runtime.

The everyday mechanics of a short fuse

Beyond the chat, Simply Calm tracks the ordinary rhythm of anger: a daily two-slider check-in for anger and sleep quality, a one-tap SOS into rescue breathing, and five guided breathing patterns with a haptic-synchronised breathing ring. Swift Charts insights link anger to sleep quality with an auto-generated correlation. A library of short articles covers the neuroscience of sleep-deprived anger and the Four Horsemen. Sessions can be selectively shared with a partner or therapist as a redacted export. Everything needed in a hot moment (check-ins, breathing, rescue SOS, the library, affirmations and crisis resources) stays free; an optional Premium subscription unlocks the Coach and Insights tabs.
